SPD recovers firearm from Smyrna Middle School

A Smyrna Police Dept. school resource officer recovered a loaded firearm from the Smyrna Middle School today. On 10/27/21, at approx. 12 p.m., a staff member notified the school resource officer that a 14-year-old student, from Camden, DE had turned over a firearm that was in his possession to a member of school staff. Investigation revealed that the student was suffering a mental health crisis and was having thoughts of self-harm. The student was placed in protective custody and transported to a local hospital for a mental health evaluation. Charges against the student will be pending further investigation.
