Smyrna Police arrest Dover man for rape of vulnerable adult

Smyrna Police detectives have arrested a Dover man for the rape of a vulnerable adult. On Sunday 5/23/21, SPD detectives were alerted that an adult female victim was at Kent General Hospital for treatment of a sexual assault which had occurred in Smyrna. Investigators met with the victim and hospital staff and confirmed the allegations. Investigation revealed that the victim was a resident of a group home for vulnerable adults. A case worker assigned to the home, identified as Carlette Wheeler, 46 of Dover allegedly forcibly raped and assaulted the victim while he was alone with her. After significant investigation, detectives obtained warrants for Mr. Wheeler and he turned himself into SPD on 5/27/21. Mr. Wheeler was arraigned via video court in JP #2 on the following charges:

Rape 1st degree

Rape 2nd degree

4 counts of Unlawful Sexual Contact 3rd degree

Sexual Harassment

Indecent Exposure

After arraignment, Mr. Wheeler was committed to the Sussex Correctional Institute in lieu of $164,200 secured bond.
